Effect of ion irradiation after platinum nanoparticles deposition onto glassy carbon substrates on microstructural evolution and oxygen reduction reaction activities
Abstract
The effect of Ar+-irradiation after platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) deposition onto glassy carbon (GC) substrates on microstructural evolution and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activities of the Pt oxygen-reduction electrocatalyst was investigated in this study. The microstructural developments of PtNPs on GC substrates before and after the ion irradiation were evaluated by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. In addition, the ORR activities were measured by the rotating disk electrode method. From these results, the ion irradiation to PtNPs deposited on GC substrates leads to the improvement of ORR activities due to the enhancement of the Pt-carbon substrate interaction.
