Summarizing the GALEX Flare Catalog (+ other variables), results of a systematic search of GALEX data for astrophysical variables at fast cadences
Abstract
We have performed a systematic search of GALEX data for astrophysical variability on timescales of minutes in sources between approximately 14.4-20.7 AB Mag observed in all MIS-mode observations with exposures longer than 500 seconds. The resulting catalog of more than a thousand UV-variable sources includes many species of object, including flaring stars, eclipsing binaries, AGN, pulsations, and indeterminate cataclysmic variables. We will present a summary of this new GALEX Flare Catalog (+ other sources), or GFCAT+. We will also describe the technical approach to developing GFCAT+ and provide an overview of time-varying artifacts and systematics in GALEX data, some of which have not previously been described.
