Mesoscale Magnetic Structure in the Solar Wind
Abstract
Parker Solar Probe magnetic field measurements show highly-structured Alfvenic 'switchbacks' on top of the radial heliospheric magnetic field. Although tangential (T and N) components of the magnetic field are dominated by the switchback activity, it exhibits some 'mesoscale' structure. Focusing on Orbit 6 and 7, we used optimized time intervals of mode-filtering to remove the magnetic field switchbacks and examine this structure. The inflexibility of a set interval allowed some magnetic switchback behavior to remain since the duration of magnetic switchbacks can range from seconds to hours. The remaining outliers were removed with a Butterworth low pass filter. A Hilbert transformation applied to one of the filtered components (tangential or normal) provided a 180-rotated dataset. Comparing this transformed dataset, with the remaining filtered dataset provided information regarding their frequency values and if there is a relationship between the two components.
