A New Framework for Convergent Research: Actionable and Strategic Integrated Science and Technology (ASIST)
Abstract
In 2020, the USGS initiated a new approach to enhance science co-production, interdisciplinary science connections, and technology integration. The Actionable and Strategic Integrated Science and Technology (ASIST) approach serves as a framework for convergent research by identifying interdisciplinary science connections. During this American Geophysical Union Innovation Session, the Colorado River Basin Actionable and Strategic Integrated Science and Technology (ASIST) team will share examples from this landscape-scale framework through interactive activities for session attendees joining in-person and virtually.
Group Activity 1: Join a real-time, interactive activity to map science network connections between session participants. Complex science questions identified prior to the session will be posed by resource managers, decision makers, and organizations in the Colorado River Basin. Explore the use of advanced technology allowing the science community to make independent efforts findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. Through this exploration, connect with resource management organizations on a landscape to foster new collaborations. Group Activity 2: Contribute to the development of a participatory visualization that represents collaborative team science and different perspectives on the complexity of living with and studying drought. Team science requires creating partnerships in the science community and beyond, to co-design, co-develop, and co-produce science across the landscape. As science questions from collaborators continue to increase in complexity, the science community needs to successfully and nimbly work across organizations to tackle complex challenges. The artistic method for this activity will be accessible and welcoming to participants with all levels of artistic skills (including beginners).- Publication:
