Smart Rock: Low Cost, User Friendly Stream Monitoring
Abstract
The Smart Rock is a submersible sensor suite that monitors water depth, temperature, turbidity, and salinity (EC) of a stream over time and is designed to be built by anyone. Making stream monitoring affordable and accessible to anyone anywhere. The latest revision of the Smart Rock has had each sensor tested in the lab using known solutions to test accuracy and reliability. Followed by tests in the field to ensure the software and hardware can withstand a real deployment. The Smart Rock has shown that its ability to collect data is on par with the previous revisions' accuracy and stability.
Most of the changes made to the Smart Rock in this latest revision were to the design of the unit. The salinity (EC) sensor was updated to a new in house design to improve the reliability of the sensor. Other than the that sensors and electronics remain unchanged. The goal of this revision was to build upon the existing smart rock by listening to the users and making it more affordable, user friendly, and smaller.- Publication:
