The search for continuous gravitational waves
Abstract
Gravitational wave astronomy has opened a unique window onto the observable Universe. Alongside the continued successful detection of short-duration gravitational-wave signals, the search for fainter long-duration signals is ongoing. The detection of continuous gravitational waves from rapidly-rotating neutron stars would yield new insights into their physics. I will present an overview of past and present efforts to search for continuous gravitational waves with LIGO and Virgo data, and the numerous challenges involved.
