Cryptic diversity in a vagile Hawaiian moth group suggests complex factors drive diversification
Abstract
The sphinx moth genus Hyles has unexpected diversity across the Hawaiian Islands. Molecular systematic analysis reveals four cryptic lineages in well-known group. Many Hyles are highly vagile, but the genus generates single island endemics. Some Hawaiian Hyles single islands endemics have multi-island sister species. Despite shared ecologies, some species are common, while sister species are rare.
