Getting Inside the Ocean with Sound
Abstract
Areas with complex human - ocean dynamics and minimal scientific monitoring are challenging to study. Transdisciplinary approaches and collaborations can provide key pathways for discovery, innovation, and engagement. A unique funding opportunity provided by the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative enabled a marine biologist - musician and an underwater videographer to collaborate on exploring the soundscape of the MesoAmerican Reef, also known as the Great Mayan Reef. Methodologies developed in this collaboration include music composition approaches using research recordings, and mindfulness activities inspired by scuba breathing techniques. Through ongoing educational workshops, the collaborators are sharing this work and gaining additional perspectives, and helping people tune in to soundscapes and connect with the ocean.
