Non-linear Conduction Phenomena of Black-SmS
Abstract
We study current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of semiconducting phase of SmS as functions of temperature and magnetic field. We have observed a non-linear conduction (NLC) and a negative differential resistance (NDR), both of which become prominent with lowering temperature. The NDR is accompanied by a time-relaxation process: for a step-function-like time-dependent input current, the sample voltage shows an exponential response with a relaxation time of 0.1-2 s depending on the step size of the input current. We have also observed a hysteresis in the I-V curves, and in the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity under magnetic field as well.
