Diffusion-induced flows exterior to ellipsoids
Abstract
We report on new theoretical and experimental results for diffusion-induced flow by objects immersed in a linear background stratification. First, new exact solutions in 2d for ellipses demonstrate the dependence of the flow strength on the aspect ratio, which is shown to grow as the horizontal axis increases in length. These are calculated for insulating, conducting, and Dirichlet boundary conditions. These exact solutions are compared with COMSOL simulations. Second, experiments in the moderate Peclet regime are presented for various geometries including elliptical cylinders and ellipsoids which further illustrate the dependence on aspect ratio and Peclet number.
