Virtually Dipping into Ocean Science for an All-Girl Audience
Abstract
Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) and Science World, both in British Columbia, uphold the following visions respectively: "ONC enhances life on Earth by providing knowledge and leadership that deliver solutions for science, society, and industry"; "Within a generation, Canada will be a country of thriving, sustainable communities rooted in scientific literacy, technological innovation, and a deep connection to nature." Despite Canada being bordered by three oceans, there is no mandate to teach ocean literacy concepts in formal education. In addition, we know that only 22% of STEM jobs in Canada are held by women. How do we change this statistic and ensure inclusive access to ocean literacy and STEM programming so that girls and underrepresented audiences have the opportunity to participate?
One proven method to address this challenge is that organizations routinely offer girls-only programming and events. This presentation will share various girls-only activities while highlighting our collaboration at the annual Girls and STEAM Symposium and Showcase in November 2020. As an added design constraint this year, health recommendations due to the COVID-19 pandemic lead us to pivot our offerings to a virtual platform. Further, our shared purpose and diverse strengths allowed us to create innovative ocean and STEM programming for our target audience. Leveraging our collective experience delivering content virtually since March, 2020, we established best practices for learning and engagement with girls, ages 11-13. One silver lining during this challenging time is that the virtual symposium will allow us to reach 16 times the number of participants without sacrificing content and experience. This presentation will not only share our story of effective collaboration but provide suggestions for others to create their own successes in reaching underserved audiences. We will discuss lessons learned so others can learn from our experiences. Resources, online tool suggestions, and example presentations will be available to all participants.- Publication:
