Impact on Air quality parameters during the Raikoke Volcano eruption using Satellite Observations
Abstract
The volcanic activities over Central Kurile Island of Russia are significantly increased in last decade. A recent volcanic eruption on Raikoke island began on June 21, 2019 at 18:05 GMT. The volcanic ash reaches an altitude of 10−13 km above sea level. This volcano is situated at a height of 551 m asl and it has a big crater of around 700 m in diameter and covers an area of around 2 x2.5 km (Gorshkov, 1958, 1970). This eruption was captured by various satellites like Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), Himawari-8,TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument(TROPOMI) etc. The Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) was in the range of 3-5 as seen from Himawari-8 Satellite towards the origin and eastern side of volcano. Angstrom Exponent (AE) shows dominance of fine mode aerosols away from origin at a distance of around 1500 km.The effect of this eruption was observed in daily and monthly AOD also. The eruptive column reached the height of 10−12 km above the crater. The clear picture of this eruption was seen through VIIRS satellite as the ash cloud covered a length of around 400 km from the origin. The mean SO2 columnar density from TROPOMI comes in the range of 2.75 DU on June 22,2019. Volcanic eruptions are composed of gases like water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrogen fluoride (HF) and ashplumes etc. The Aerosol Index (AI) shows dominance of absorbing aerosols with value greater than 5. This shows dominance of SO2. In only one day the volcanic ash travelled more than 1500 km. Air quality was poor for three weeks after eruption started and felt in parts of Eastern Russia and Siberia.
