Radial Variation of ICME Plasma Properties in the Inner Heliosphere
Abstract
In order to understand the thermodynamic evolution of ICMEs, we need to probe the radial variations of the ion kinetic conditions in ICMEs. Using the newly processed Helios 1 and 2 data, we study the proton and alpha particle (when available) temperature anisotropy, beta, and their distributions with respect to ion instabilities in ICMEs. We examine the variations of these ion properties from 0.3 to 1 AU in a statistical sense. We separate the sheath and flux rope parts of ICMEs, and examine if the ion preferential heating is different between the two different plasma conditions.
