Probing Active Dust Devils with an Instrumented Drone
Abstract
Dust devils, dry convective vortices rendered visible by dust, play an important but poorly quantified role in Mars' climate. To explore the structures of dust devils, we have flown an instrumented quadcopter through active dust devils on Oregon's Alvord Desert. In this presentation, we will discuss results from encounters with active dust devils, including footage collected onboard the drone from inside the dusty vortices.
