A remarkable new stonefly with bisexual structures in mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber (Insecta: Perlidae)
Abstract
A remarkable new stonefly, Burmacroneuria projecta gen. et sp. nov. is described and illustrated from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. The new fossil genus belongs to the species rich family Perlidae and is perhaps a new member of subfamily Acroneuriinae. It is distinguished from all other perlids by the female subgenital plate partially forming a stalked hammer. Females of ancient Perlidae might be able to produce drumming signals to attract the males for mating.
