Situation of female physics students in the National Autonomous University of Mexico
Abstract
It is well known that women face difficulties during their professional studies that are unique to their gender, particularly in the fields of science, technology, and engineering. This work aims to identify some of these difficulties in order to understand them, along with their possible causes, so that some solutions can eventually be proposed. The study is based on a survey conducted among female students of physics, in both undergraduate and graduate studies, of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, as spelled in Spanish), the largest and most important university in the country. The sample consisted of 98 responses showing different aspects of their academic and personal lives, such as discrimination, harassment, and family attitudes toward physics study.
