Global Ionospheric Specification: Ionospheric space weather data product of FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2
Abstract
The recently launched FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 (F7/C2) constellation is expected to provide ~5000 radio occultation (RO) sounding events per day, giving atmospheric and ionospheric researchers an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the dynamic processes and variability in the mid- and low-latitude regions. To study the day-to-day variability of ionosphere, we have developed a global ionospheric data assimilation model (Global Ionospheric Specification), using RO observations together with auxiliary observations from ground based GNSS stations. The assimilation system is capable of producing hourly three-dimensional ionospheric electron density profiles with 2.5°x5° horizontal and 20 km vertical resolution and will be available as a near-real-time F7/C2 data product for researchers. Additionally, we would also be providing the global density product using the already existing RO observations from FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC mission. The assimilated daily global electron density could be very crucial in studying spatial and temporal behavior of the thermosphere-ionosphere system and understanding the ionospheric response to coupling from lower atmosphere as well as above, and in particular the day-to-day variability. In this study, we demonstrate the potential of this data product by carrying out tidal analysis of day-to-day ionospheric electron density profiles during the stratospheric sudden warming events. With the advantage of the newly developed assimilation data product, we also examine day-to-day variations of wave-4 pattern, Weddell sea anomaly, plasma density structures, and report some of the early observations using F7/C2. We further apply the daily electron density to carry out tidal analysis, comparing to the known tidal modes previously shown by TIMED data.
