AGU Celebrates its Centennial with the Initiation of a New Journal: Perspectives in Earth and Space Science
Abstract
AGU announces the creation of a new journal, Perspectives in Earth and Space Science, which aims to tell the stories of AGU members to both document the history of the Earth and space sciences and to express the experiential lessons that could provide guidance and inspiration to current and future geoscientists. Perspectives articles will capture the stories of science, both scientific and personal, of Earth and space scientists from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences. It is anticipated that the majority of articles will be written by senior scientists who have participated in research that contributed to shaping the course and direction of Earth and space sciences, particularly AGU Fellows. However, the editorial board will also seek accounts of significant accomplishments or stories from prominent Earth and space scientists who represent the rich diversity of AGU's membership. As part of the celebration of 100 years of AGU science, it is fitting that AGU create a legacy project that involves storytelling and the recording of AGU's scientific history. Articles can take one of several formats, documenting the author's overall science or a particular aspect of their science, or providing a story that explores a factor or set of factors that influenced the scientist's career. Articles can also include science-policy interactions, the role of the author's science in undergraduate and graduate education, or interactions with the media and general public. Articles are not meant to be research or review articles, nor should they be a complete autobiography, but should focus on scientific accomplishments of personal or professional significance that could be informative or instructional to the general AGU community, especially early career individuals. AGU's centennial is as much about looking forward to the next 100 years as it is about looking backward to the past, and it is the hope that this documentation of the stories of past accomplishments will help provide guidance and inspiration for scientists in the future. The AGU editorial board will work with authors to help ensure the full effectiveness of articles, and AGU may repurpose some of these stories into other centennial content geared more toward the general public or other audiences.
