Web Service Support for the SEG-Y Data Format at the IRIS Data Management Center
Abstract
IRIS Data Services (DS) has long stored a repository of active-source seismic datasets. Active source seismic experiments traditionally involve arrays of sensors that record subsurface reflections from waves generated by a controlled seismic energy source. These data, often stored in SEG-Y format, are enjoying improved accessibility through web services.
PH5 (PASSCAL HDF5) is the preferred archival format for active and mixed source datasets at the IRIS Data Management Center (DMC). Access to the PH5 archive is made by utilizing a suite of PH5 web service interfaces. SEG-Y revision 1 and 2 join miniSEED, SAC, and GeoCSV as supported web service time series output formats. Data are returned as either a common shot gather or a time window selection. Approximately 11 terabytes of SEG-Y data that are currently archived at the DMC are scheduled to be converted to the PH5 format. These data will accompany around 22 terabytes of PH5 data that are already accessible through the PH5 web services. The web services will for the first time make these SEG-Y datasets widely visible to the research community.- Publication:
