Global Water Futures Data Management: Learning How to Steer a Big Ship With a Small Paddle.
Abstract
Broader policies and practices regarding the accessibility of publicly funded research data collection and dissemination are gaining momentum in Canada to maximize investment impact, increase collaboration and produce synergies. The Global Water Futures Program (GWF), funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, is a multi-institutional, university-based freshwater research program. GWF currently has hundreds of researchers investigating an array of topics from field studies, sensor development and modelling, to policy, human and economic impact, as well as research through the lens of Western and Indigenous Science. Recognizing the interdisciplinary nature of this research and the need for integration and support of common data interests, GWF has developed a policy to ensure that the data and tools developed reflect FAIR data principles. The ongoing development of the supporting data governance structure, standards and processes has presented many opportunities for collaboration as the GWF Data Management team seeks to create cohesion across this diverse research landscape. Progress, challenges, solutions and lessons learned in implementing the data policy will be discussed.
