Engaging Many with Space Sciences through NASA's STEM Innovation Lab
Abstract
From the Apollo landing on the Moon to the Parker Solar Probe touching the Sun, NASA's exploration of the universe has fascinated many. More recently, the NASA's STEM Innovation Lab at Goddard Space Flight Center is looking at ways to make space science data more accessible and engaging for various learners. As a hybrid think tank and makerspace, the STEM Innovation Lab invites NASA scientists, engineers and educators to explore and share ideas using educational technology. Two ideas developed in partnership with Harvard & Smithsonian's Center for Astrophysics included the Eclipse Soundscapes and 3D printing of the dynamic Sun. Another idea is to develop voice skill that enables smart speakers to navigate NASA websites and resources. Also, software developers are researching how to help the visually impaired not only to navigate their physical environment but also space/space sciences through virtual realities. These and other projects are described in "Exploration Idea Profiles" for users to further explore and incubate them in their own environments. NASA's STEM Innovation Lab welcomes collaborators to try and share ideas. Visit steminnovationlab.org for more information.
