Scientist and Artists as translators of natural processes and beauty
Abstract
What is exactly a scientist? What is the scientists' job? In our view, a scientist is the translator of the language of the natural world. His job is as much to communicate to the public as it is to understand what the natural environment is telling us. They have the mission to study, interpret and translate to humanity all the activities, events and processes from the natural world. Artists on a similar way help us see behind the obvious, and are able to present alternative views reality, interpreting patterns and beauty. We are approaching a tipping point in the timeline of Earth's evolution, and the scientific message we as a community are trying to pass must be clearer than ever. Despite this many scientists fail in their attempt to communicate their message, and institutions and professional societies are not providing resources to bridge this gap. Collaborations between science and art are a necessary step in this direction, however, we argue for a tighter integration of science and art, starting from university curricula, to give the next generation of scientist the visual and storytelling tools they need to effectively communicate science to a broader audience, bridging the gaps between art and hard sciences.
