The AGCI Energy Table: An Open-Access Global Energy Reference & Educational Resource
Abstract
The Aspen Global Change Institute has developed over the last half decade a comprehensive, open-access, authoritative reference for global energy data. This can serve as a valuable resource for energy scholars, students, and others interested in making comparisons between conventional and renewable energy sources on a global scale. It is surprisingly difficult to find data in common units on the production and growth of various energy sources in a single reference. The AGCI Energy Table was developed to respond to this need. Data is provided in this free, online resource on the global availability, production, capacity, growth rates, and costs of all major energy sources in use or development. Extensive background information is also provided for each energy source through informational sidebars detailing imminent breakthroughs, emerging technologies, as well as social, political, environmental, and justice concerns of each energy resource. A tab of the AGCI Energy Table provides additional data on established and emerging energy storage technologies, with numbers on their capacity, duration, efficiency, lifetime, mobility, cost, density, and technical maturity. All data is sourced from publications and journals, and each data cell has a hyperlinked citation directly to source material. Data is also provided in common units (with explanations of how conversions were done) to allow for easier comparisons across different sources and technologies. This comprehensive reference can now be easily leveraged into an educational resource with sample problems that can be tailored to undergraduate and graduate level courses on global energy to build literacy about a rapidly changing energy system. Students can also explore AGCI's interactive Energy Tool, which brings the data of the Energy Table to life, enabling higher education students to create new global energy portfolios and see in real time their impacts on energy costs, emissions, and the carbon budget.
