Quantifying hydrologic regime shifts on ecological time scales using wavelets
Abstract
In this talk, we discuss a novel method for measuring hydrological regime shifts in the context of community ecology. We develop a wavelets method--comparison of a power spectrum to a blue noise null. In this method, we search for changes in regimes on scales relevant to ecological systems (2-10 years). We apply the method to data from the USGS NWIS (century stations) and compare regime shifts across CONUS. The talk ends on implications for biogechemisty and community ecology.
