An optimal operation model of agricultural drainage stations for preventing inundation of paddy districts
Abstract
The objective of this study was to develop an optimal operation model of agricultural drainage stations for preventing inundation of paddy districts. The flood damage in paddy districts has been increasing due to torrential rains caused by climate change recently, and countermeasures to avoid inundation damage need to be established. The South Korean government is carrying out a nationwide drainage improvement project in inundation-prone areas to alleviate damage from flooding in agricultural land. In order to efficiently operate drainage stations constructed by the drainage improvement project, it is necessary to develop an optimal operation model and determine the starting and the operation time. The optimum operation model developed in this study was constructed to determine the optimum operating time of the agricultural drainage facilities based on the real-time rainfall forecast data of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The stream water level was calculated using the Hydrologic Engineering Center's River Analysis System (HEC-RAS), and the water balance equation considering drainage delay was applied for the water level calculation of paddy districts. The effect of the water level reduction according to staring and operating time of drainage stations was analyzed. Based on the analysis results, the optimal operating time of drainage stations was determined. We performed the case study in flood-prone paddy districts in South Korea, and the applicability of the optimal model was analyzed. The optimal operation model developed in this study is expected to be useful for establishing drainage management rules for inundation damage prevention in the paddy districts.
