"GPS on Bench Marks": NGS Engaging Communities to Improve Positional Science
Abstract
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Geodetic Survey (NOAA's NGS) has been engaging the geodetic, survey, and geospatial communities with the citizen science project "GPS on Bench Marks." This project has been ongoing since 2014, and user participation has exploded in the last 24 months. The increasing data contributions are the direct result of NGS identifying passive control points (bench marks) of geodetic importance towards improving the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS).
This presentation will discuss the next generation of the "GPS on Bench Marks" project which will help improve the NSRS and prepare for its modernization, coming in 2022. Currently, public contributions directly support the development of the 2022 datum tools such as the Vertical Datum Transformation Tool. These tools will enable positional conversion from existing datums to the upcoming datums, i.e., North American-Pacific Geopotential Datum of 2022 (NAPGD2022), contain current and accurate positional information on passive control via reprocessing and give the community up-to-date information about the status of individual passive control bench marks. Today, NGS's "GPS on Bench Marks" project webpage shows - via an interactive web-map - geographic areas where additional observations would be beneficial. The page promotes opportunities for non-geodetic activities that support this project by providing positional information, mark status, and photographs through GPS enabled smartphones, geocaching, and others. These community-based science activities could ultimately augment many geospatial activities, including coursework, community outreach events, and training.
