Improved Regional CO2 Flux Estimates from OCO-2 v9 Retrievals
Abstract
In Crowell et al (2019), an ensemble of atmospheric inversion models was employed to produce regional flux estimates at monthly time scales for 2015 and 2016. The resultant fluxes were propagated through to concentrations and evaluated against aircraft and TCCON observations. The major findings in this experiment included: comparable global growth rates inferred from OCO-2 and the global in situ network, as well as similar extratropical Northern Hemisphere seasonal cycles and annual fluxes; significant differences in inferred tropical seasonality between the different observations, as well as a large source in northern Africa seen in OCO-2 that was not inferred from the in situ network.
In this presentation, we will discuss the results from a new set of atmospheric inversions that use the updated v9 OCO-2 data product, including a comparison to the previous work as well as what OCO-2 sees for 2017 and 2018. Chevallier et al (2019) suggests that the more recent OCO-2 retrievals constrain fluxes that agree well with aircraft data from various campaigns, indicating an improvement over the results from the v7 ensemble. We will address the robustness of this result as well as comparisons to TCCON using a multi-model ensemble. References Crowell, S., Baker, D., Schuh, A., Basu, S., Jacobson, A.
