Aerosol physical/chemical/optical properties at recent (2015-2019) high PM concentration events in Korea and China
Abstract
Recently, the high concentration events of particulate matter (PM) have become a big problem in East Asian region. For example, the very special law was enacted this year, so that high concentration of aerosol is defined legally as a national social disaster in Korea. To meet the public concern of health caused by high concentration of PM highly raised, this research has been done to find out the unique physical, chemical, and optical characteristics of aerosols in recent 5-years high PM concentration events over East Asian region, especially in Korea and China. Surface ambient mass concentration/size distribution data (physical properties), satellite and other remote sensing data from existed AERONET/LIDAR/PANDORA network (optical properties), intensive monitoring data for atmospheric chemical composition (chemical properties), and meteorological data at mega-city/industrial city in Korea and China were used to analyze characteristics of aerosols as high concentration events occur. We classified high concentration events into 2~3 cases according to different physical/chemical/optical conditions respectfully, conducted in-depth analysis and tried to generalize its unique feature for each case in order to improve performance of PM forecasting and get better understanding source apportionment.
