Pollution in Eastern ASIA (PolEASIA): towards better air quality prevision and impacts' evaluationSet-up of a forecast system over China
Abstract
Air pollution in East Asia and especially in China is an outstanding issue.
Building on an ambitious synergistic approach combining observations and modeling, the PolEASIA project aims at a better quantification of the sources and the distribution of the major pollutants. Inverse modeling coupling satellite observations and regional modeling have been applied to derive highly resolved optimized inventories of NOx emissions over China for a decade. The project consortium is composed of two French academic partners (LISA, LSCE), one French SME (ARIA Technologies), and three Chinese academic partners (CRAES, IAP, PKU). Among the different objectives of the PolEASIA project, ARIA Technologies focused on the development of efficient and marketable forecasting systems including end-user friendly applications to provide comprehensive pollution and risk indicators to public authorities and population. The system is based on the WRF and CHIMERE models. It includes the distribution of air quality index (AQI), health risks and visibility indicators, with applications adapted for both policy makers and citizens. The forecasting system benefits from all the developments conducted within the project and more specifically includes an optimized emission inventory estimated thanks to inverse modeling methodology. The present work exposes an evaluation of the forecast system on past episodes (December, March and August 2015) thanks to multiple measurement database allowing to evaluate the performance of the meteorological model as well as the chemistry-transport model. The evaluation includes: Ground measurement database (CRAES data, Beijing US embassy, Berkeley) Satellite observation of Aerosol Optical Thickness from MODIS COPERNICUS program CAMS models, in order to assess our system in comparison with the CAMS archives- Publication:
