Myxozoans: Ancient metazoan parasites find a home in phylum Cnidaria
Abstract
After almost 200 years of debate, Myxozoa is placed within the phylum Cnidaria. Myxozoan polar capsules are homologous to cnidocyst stinging capsules. Myxozoan parasites are likely as diverse as their free-living cnidarian relatives. Phylum Cnidaria now includes species in aquatic and terrestrial environments.
