Are long commutes short on benefits? Commute duration and various manifestations of well-being
Abstract
Longer commutes are associated with higher wages for the worker. Longer commutes are associated with suburban as opposed to principal city living and higher homeownership rates. Married people tend to have longer commutes, suggesting long commutes are sometimes taken on for the benefit of a spouse. Longer commutes are not associated with mood during the commute trip, better mood during work, or more meaningful work. Commute duration is not associated with commuter life satisfaction.
