Metallic nanoparticles obtained through phytosynthesis: new advanced materials of the twenty-first century
Abstract
The global pharmaceutical and phytopharmaceutical industry has been developing compounds for over a century, but many of these never get to market. The evolution of bacteria strains resistant against multiple antibiotics prompted scientists and medical experts to look for antimicrobial alternatives. Nowadays, nanotechnology offers solution to different problems: from nano-sensors or nanocarrier to nanoparticles used in coatings or drugs. In the last years, there has been a great interest in obtaining and characterizing metallic nanoparticles using the routes of green chemistry, in order to reduce or eliminate the use and generation of substances hazardous to human health and the environment. The present work aims to review our group's experience in the field of phytosynthesized nanoparticles, in terms of phytosynthesis, characterization and evaluation of their possible applications, especially focusing on their antimicrobial properties.
