Introduced Grey Squirrels subvert supplementary feeding of suburban wild birds
Abstract
Grey Squirrels exclude other species when present on bird feeders. Grey Squirrels greatly reduce feeder use by wild birds. Birds change timings of visits to feeders in response. Feeder guards reduce squirrel feeder use, but also reduces wild bird visits. People may be unintentionally supporting a species which negatively affects birds.
