Mars sample return processing: X-Ray Computed Tomography of the Mars 2020 cache
Abstract
The Mars 2020 rover mission will collect and cache samples from the martian surface for possible retrieval and subsequent return to Earth. As part of planning for the initial characterization and subsequent distribution to the scientific community, samples would be analyzed while still sealed in their containers with non-destructive, non-invasive techniques such as X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT). XCT is the suggested initial step that may minimally alter samples for most subsequent techniques including organic analyses and provide a three-dimensional whole sample reference. However, the use and effect of laboratory XCT scans on organics is poorly constrained. This study will select Mars relevant organic compounds to be combined with Mars relevant analogue materials under Mars 2020 cache-like conditions to identify possible effects of XCT on organics.
