MARSIS observations of field-aligned irregularities and ducted radio propagation in the Martian ionosphere

We show a connection between greatly enhanced plasma densities in the Martian ionosphere and unusual propagation of radio signals along magnetic fields lines. Both effects are shown to be related to intense electric fields present in the ionosphere, driven perhaps by the interaction with the solar wind. Similar processes are sometimes acting in the Earth's ionosphere.
