Settlement dynamics and migration of late Neanderthals and early modern Humans in southern Germany and Austria between 45-35ka. A comparative study.
Abstract
The poster presents the goals, which shall be achieved by a PhD-project started in early 2018, integrated in the CRC 806 "Our Way to Europe" at the University of Cologne. The focus lies on the modeling of human - environment relationships during the Weichselian Pleniglacial (OIS3) in the area of southern Germany and Austria, where the settlement and migration of late Neanderthals (represented by leaf point "transitional" assemblages) as well as early Homo sapiens (Aurignacian sites) will be examined in comparison to each other. Therefore it is planned to collect different geoarchaeological data from existing datasets and fieldwork and to combine them in order to establish digital models. One of the main tasks will be trying to date several leaf point sites due to the lack of a fine grained chronology. This is crucial for a correlation of the archaeological and geological data.
