Once Upon a Time... A Scientific Fairy Tale - Explaining Ocean Research to Children and Adults
Abstract
"Once Upon a Time… a Scientific Fairy Tale" is an award-winning project that aims to communicate science and promote the dialogue between scientists and the public. At the heart of this project, there is a set of short stories (tales) with scientific content in a clear language, illustrated by professional and amateur artists. The stories cover different topics related to hot scientific issues such as to ocean research, climate science and human impact on marine ecosystems. They were written by an international group of young scientists working in different research fields of the marine realm (geochemistry, microbiology, geology, ecology…) at various institutions in and near Bremen, Germany. The target audience are adults with a connection to children (parents, teachers…). A first volume of stories has been published as an illustrated e-book in English, German and Spanish. The e-book can be downloaded at https://www.marum.de/Entdecken/Es-war-einmal/Geschichten.html.
This project was one of the winners of the competition "Show your Science" in the framework of the "Science Year 2016/2017- Seas and Oceans" (Hochschulwettbewerb im Wissenschaftsjahr 2016/17 - Meere und Ozeane) of the German science communication foundation "Science in Dialogue" (Wissenschaft im Dialog). After the completion of the awarded year, the group decided to continue independently, writing a second volume of new stories. In addition, the "Once upon a time…A scientific fairy tale" lives on with other activities, like reading events and translations of the first e-book into other languages (Italian, French, Chinese, Portuguese, Hebrew, Filipino, Korean and Russian), aiming to reach a broader audience and grow bigger with new members involved in it.- Publication:
