The AGCI Energy Table: A Comprehensive, Open-Access Reference for Global Energy Data
Abstract
Creating an open, transparent, comprehensive reference for information on global energy statistics and trends has been a challenging and elusive feat. Many sources of information are limited, focusing solely on conventional fuels or renewables, or only reporting on production, installed capacity, or consumption. Many require subscriptions to expensive academic journals. Even for experts in the energy field, this creates a verifiable obstacle course when looking to make direct comparisons between different energy sources or technologies. Yet it is critical that reliable information is easily accessible to researchers, students, and decision-makers alike. To meet this need, we have developed the AGCI Energy Table: a unique, open-access, online portal that provides a one-stop-shop for information on the availability, scalability, growth rates, costs, breakthroughs, obstacles, as well as social, environmental, and political considerations for the major energy sources in use or development today. The Table also features a tab with comprehensive information on energy storage technology power, capacity, duration, efficiency, lifetime, mobility, cost, density, and technical maturity. All data is sourced from high-quality publications and journals, and each data cell has a hyperlinked citation directly to source material. Data is also provided in common units (with explanations of how conversions were done) to allow for easier comparisons across different sources and technologies. The AGCI Energy Table is exportable as an excel file or a google sheet, so that users can easily download this comprehensive reference and conduct their own analyses. Also featured is a link to AGCI's Interactive Energy Scenarios Tool, which allows a broader audience to experiment with how sector efficiency improvements, electrification, and alternate energy source portfolios can create energy savings, cost savings, and greenhouse gas emissions reductions. We update the data in these resources on an ongoing basis, in the effort to maintain the accuracy of these valuable and unique educational resources in a rapidly changing energy landscape. We aim to continue to expand the reach and scope of this project.
