Achieving Scaleable Data Management Through a Dataset Level of Service Model
Abstract
The NASA Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) utilizes a dataset Level of Service (LoS) model to effectively steward a growing collection of NASA Earth science data. "Service" refers to the spectrum of data management activities and outputs provided by the DAAC in support of the data we manage. The dataset LoS model is an expression of what kinds of services are provided and what amount of each service is provided. The LoS model enables the NSIDC DAAC to appropriately tailor our services based on the nature of the dataset, the needs of the data provider and user communities, the requirements of the NASA mission/project, and the available resources. This presentation will provide an overview of the NSIDC DAAC dataset LoS model and recent enhancements made to the model, including representing the LoS on dataset landing pages as means of clearly communicating to the user community the services provided by the DAAC.
