POES data rescue: 1966 to 1978
Abstract
We will discuss the methods used to recover Polar Satellite Imagery of the Earth (POES) for the 1966 to 1978 period before the contemporary POES AVHRR time series.
The rescue of ESSA/NOAA imagery from the 1966 to 1978 is now complete and is available in the NOAA OneStop data system listed under "NOAA Polar Orbiting Satellite (POES) Visible and Infrared Satellite data from ESSA (1966 - 1972) and NOAA (1972 - 1978) Satellites". That provides a continuous daily satellite record of the Earth's weather. Also we are in the process of rescuing IR and Visible data from Nimbus 1 to 6 in the same time frame. The Nimbus rescue is more complex because it consists of swath data from various sources: film of various formats and digital products. The ESSA/NOAA product is simpler to process but has some artifacts like maps burned into the data which will make it a challenge to use for climate studies. The Nimbus data is more scattered in time because of missing orbits, but has the potential to provide a clearer view of the daily weather because it is higher resolution and contains less mapping artifacts in the imagery. The Nimbus data might fill in the gap between NOAA 4 and AVHRR (4/1978 to 11/1978). It is remarkable that so much can be recovered from photographic products from so long ago. Extending the record of satellite observations by more than a decade is well worth the effort to recover this old data.- Publication:
