Advancing Climate Literacy and Energy Literacy Through Climate Change Education Effective Practices For Working With Educators, Scientists, Decision Makers, Youth And The Public
Abstract
Few issues facing our society are more urgent than reducing our vulnerability to climate impacts and preparing for the staggering transitions to a low-carbon economy and resilient communities. Yet our schools, higher education and free choice learning institutions are often not prepared or focused on building awareness and inspiring action to care for our communities and our planet. Through the activation of communities extensive education systems, we have the opportunity to showcase the adaptability of our cities, embrace of a low-carbon future and inspire our future leaders and create a stronger communities.
Building on the 2016 Effective Practice Guide was produced by the Climate Change Education Partnership (CCEP) Alliance. While effective education has been traditionally defined as the acquisition of knowledge, climate and energy education community maintain a broader definition of "effective" to include the acquisition and use of climate change knowledge to inform decision-making. In coordination of the Climate Change Education Partnership (CCEP) Alliance, a group of partners including NOAA Climate Program Office, Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN), and New Knowledge Organization Ltd worked to expand the effective climate change education programs, projects and audiences included in the 2016 Effective Practice Guide to create expanded guide. This guide is designed to support communities in their building of an equitable post-carbon and resilient future supported by education, community engagement, and workforce development. Case studies for how education programs are supporting communities climate actions will be highlighted. This talk will highlight recommendations for effective education and communication practices when working with different types of audiences. Educators at all levels can help address this problem. CLEAN Network is working to facilitate this; however, it requires a shared effort with the scientific community. We look forward to sharing this responsibility with AGU community.- Publication:
