Your Community Toolbox for Leading in a Changing Climate: A Step-by-Step Guide for Working Together to Protect Your Region's Quality of Life for Future Generations
Abstract
Over the past several years there have been many coordinated efforts to improve climate change literacy of diverse audiences. The challenge has been to balance science content with audience-specific messaging to achieve the goal of reaching solutions and building community resilience. Climate Education Partners (CEP) has employed a multidisciplinary approach that integrates climate science, social and learning sciences, and effective communication strategies to create innovative resources and new approaches to climate change communication that engage audiences of decision-makers and community leaders more effectively. At CEP, we learned there is great strength in amplifying what is going right and celebrating people who are doing the right thing in response to the changing climate. With a solid scientific foundation and by working together, leaders are making informed decisions on how to best protect the spectacular natural beauty, economic vibrancy and their community's quality of life, not just for today, but for all future generations. The Community Toolbox for Leading in a Changing Climate website (https://arcg.is/1efX9C) incorporates not only the educational resources we developed, the evaluation methods we used to analyze our results, and the types of activities we created, but it tells the story of how did it, how we succeeded, and how you can too. This story map approach provides users with a more visual way to learn about how we planned our approach, convened & learned together, created effective educational resources, shared our learning with our community, evaluated and refined our process, and celebrated the great work we did together. For climate change communication to be successful in the future, we will need creative and coordinated approaches. We believe we have developed resources and tools that can serve as an informative model in other communities of California, the nation and beyond.
