Rising Up, Speaking Out: Increasing Equity & Diversity through Climate Currents, a Public Communications Platform
Abstract
Spaces created for the benefit of diversity often do not reflect diversity in voice, makeup, and representation. A student-created media project, Climate Currents, supported by staff and faculty, aims to create a forum for discussion of the state of diversity in climate science and other areas of geoscience that pulls directly from on-the-ground writers and voices, and is part of UCLA's Center for Diverse Leadership in Science (CDLS). Since CDLS was founded in late 2017, it has been pivotal in creating forums to discuss perspectives of scientists from around the world., We want to extend this discussion outward, letting CDLS act as a conduit. Our project will promote voices from around the globe on climate change and other environmental issues that rarely receive a media platform including through self-written pieces, curated Q&As, student-produced video logs, and photojournalism.
We are planning multiple communication projects, including All4Corners, that seek to give voices to the people living with environmental problems including the impacts of climate change. Negotiations with potential stakeholders are underway to decide how to present, network, and reach out to the voices we want to share. Of particular interest are activists, grassroots politicians, scientists, students, and community leaders in indigenous communities. This poster will highlight our vision, motivation, structure, and plans for the year ahead.- Publication:
