The Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) community
Abstract
The Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) is an international community of early career scientists, students, and postdocs whose aim is to develop a unified perspective for the future of earth science through developing connections and experiences worldwide. YESS is a self-governed, bottom-up organization that strongly relies on voluntary work of enthusiastic early career researchers (ECR). The expertise of ECR in YESS spans both natural and social sciences. One focus of YESS is to raise awareness about and address problems that ECR may face in their respective countries, like a lack of funding or access to academic resources. Another focus of YESS is to establish an international communication platform for ECR, which transcends country boundaries and allows for interdisciplinary solutions to global issues and to develop a collective voice of ECR worldwide, by, for instance, publishing perspective papers. After 8 years and gaining over 1000 members from over 100 countries, YESS's structure includes a council, an executive committee, two regional representatives per continent, and task-specific working groups. All YESS activities are supported by the YESS Office, kindly funded by the Argentinean National Weather Service. YESS partners with other ECR networks such as the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) and the Young Hydrologic Society (YHS) and is a member of the Early Career Researchers Network of Networks. YESS is supported by and collaborates with the World Meteorological Organization's research programs as well as with national and regional research initiatives. The YESS community grows through email, an online presence (www.yess-community.org), and through representation at large conferences like the AGU Fall Meeting or the EGU General Assembly. This fast-growing, all-encompassing network of early career researchers gives participants an opportunity to engage with scientific and societal problems across all temporal and spatial scales.
