Beyond the Water Cooler: Networking Lessons Learned by the Hydrology Section Student Subcommittee (H3S)
Abstract
Success is, at least partially, driven by the extent of one's professional network, regardless of career path. This is especially true for scientists early in their careers and many organizations strive to address this need. These efforts have led to the formation of many early career scientist (ECS) networks with overlapping interests and goals, as well as similar learning curves to overcome. Therefore, grassroots efforts of these smaller groups would benefit from connection and mutual coordination to maximize each group's unique resources. One of the primary goals of AGU's Hydrology Section Student Subcommittee (H3S) is to bring a diverse, multi-disciplinary group of international students together to bridge existing networks with the goal of engaging ECSs at the individual, section, and union levels. One example of this is to continue the momentum for collaboration sparked during conference meetings between international ECS groups (e.g. Young Hydrologic Society). In this partnership, we are able to bring our ideas to fruition such that culture of our field benefits and evolves. We will briefly discuss how recent experiences influence our path forward and call for involvement from the broader AGU ECS community.
