Astronomy On Tap: Engaging Citizens in Science and Astronomy
Abstract
Astronomy on Tap is a regular event in a local place, typically a club or bar, created to engage citizens over a wide range of topics, from planets to black holes, to the beginning of the Universe. Initially created in NYC in 2013 by Dr. Meg Schwamb, the event became a national success, with over 30 satellite locations across the US, and is extending worldwide, with 17 locations outside the US. The events are generally composed of 10-20 minutes talks on a specific topic given by an expert of the field, from graduate students to senior scientists, designed to reach out the non-academic community. Although each location has its own specificity, the events are generally built to bring science to the citizens in a friendly and engaging environment, in order to initiate conversations and discussions with professional astronomers. We present the launch of the Astronomy On Tap location in San Antonio, TX. We discuss the different challenges met and how they were overcome. We highlight the key elements needed for its successful installation and our plans for future development.
