A Series of Fortunate Events
Abstract
Almost every scientist has a defining moment of clarity when they decide to pursue a career in science and behind each of these moments is a why; for some it is the thrill of discovery, for others it's the drive to create new knowledge. For me, it's the desire to help individuals and communities understand, prepare for, and live with geologic hazards. After experiencing the Hector Mine earthquake and going to work for the USGS I saw first hand how critical earthquake information is to people and communities in at-risk areas. I also came to recognize how impactful it can be for scientists to work with individuals, communities, local organizations and others to mitigate not just the risk that comes from earthquakes but also the fear and uncertainty that these events inspire. In this talk I'll explain how I transformed from a professional actor in Los Angeles to an earthquake researcher and finally to a science communication professional specializing in hazards communication.
