Visualizing and interacting with large-volume biodiversity data using the MBON Data Portal
Abstract
Over the past several decades, scientists and government agencies have amassed large collections of heterogeneous and distributed marine biological datasets. Recovering these data and providing a platform for the synthesis and analysis of marine biodiversity and habitat data in the context of environmental changes is a requirement to address national and international challenges of sustainable development, ocean assessments, resource management, and scientific research. The Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) leverages such data to characterize changes in marine biodiversity and ecosystem function. To achieve this, entirely new workflows and systems must be created to be capable of merging large, disparate datasets and presenting them intuitively to data end users. The MBON data portal system is built using several mature, open-source interoperability and data stewardship systems to provide full-lifecycle management for biological, physical, and environmental data. The MBON Portal offers state-of-the-art analytical methods for biodiversity data integration, while the larger data system includes processes for data aggregation and assembly, indexing and discovery, and exploring biodiversity and oceanographic timeseries datasets. In this presentation, we demonstrate the MBON Portal capability, discuss some of the important computational challenges of these methods and identify guidelines for determining which methods are best suited for specific data types. The MBON Portal is under active development as part of the interagency US Integrated Ocean Observing System (US IOOS), with plans to add more biological data and visualization and curation features, including integration with the open-access Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) clearing-house. The portal is being developed in collaboration with MBON researchers, managers and users for guidance on data and visualization tools most useful for the community.
