The Asian summer monsoon Chemical and Climate Impact Project (ACCLIP)
Abstract
The Asian summer monsoon Chemical and Climate Impact Project (ACCLIP) field campaign is planned to take place in July-August of 2020 with the aircraft operation based in Japan. The primary goal of ACCLIP is to investigate the impacts of Asian gas and aerosol emissions on global chemistry and climate via the linkage of Asian Summer Monsoon (ASM) convection and associated large-scale dynamics. The main objective of the campaign is to obtain a comprehensive suite of dynamical, chemical and microphysical measurements in the region of the ASM anticyclone to characterize and quantify:
- the transport pathways (vertical range, intensity, and time-scale) of the ASM uplifted air from inside of the anticyclone to the global upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) - the chemical content of air processed in the ASM for UTLS ozone chemistry, and short-lived climate forcers - the information on aerosol size, mass and chemical composition - the water vapor distribution associated with the monsoon dynamical structure The campaign is planned to have a coordinated measurement program that includes two research aircraft, ground-based observations and balloon soundings. The NSF GV is the optimum platform to sample the main outflow from the anticyclone at 10-15 km altitude and also characterize the lower troposphere to contrast with the UTLS. The NASA WB-57 will provide key observations up to 19 km altitude to provide information for stratospheric impact. The balloon soundings and other ground-based measurements, implemented with international collaborations, will complement the airborne study with full profiles of water vapor and aerosol vertical distributions up to 25 km altitude.- Publication:
