Enhancing OMPS Nadir ozone retrievals on SNPP using ozone profile data from the OMPS Limb Profiler
Abstract
The Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) on Suomi NPP has three sensors that monitor the distribution of atmospheric ozone from space using backscattered solar radiation. The Limb Profiler (LP) produces high vertical resolution ozone profiles, the Nadir Mapper (NM) creates global maps of the total column, and the Nadir Profiler (NP) continues the long-term record of ozone profiles from SBUV. The fact that these sensors are on the same spacecraft and make near-coincident measurements is an opportunity to investigate enhanced retrieval methods that combine information from the sensors. Here we explore the potential for synergy between the OMPS limb and nadir measurements by using daily, near-coincident, high-resolution ozone profiles from LP as a priori for mapper total column retrievals using the TOMS V9 ozone retrieval algorithm. We report the influence of using improved ozone profile information from LP on retrieval of the total ozone column. In particular, high quality stratospheric ozone supplied by LP retrievals can be used to improve total ozone measurements at high solar zenith angle, where UV optical depth increases significantly and sensitivity to ozone in the lower stratosphere is reduced. However the direct use of limb profiles in total ozone retrievals is restricted to along the orbital path of the LP measurements. We discuss potential ways to extend ozone profile information from LP measurements to the regions between the orbits to make wider use of the LP profile information. We compare the error analysis for the standard and enhanced versions of the total ozone retrievals and explain the importance of specifying proper uncertainties on LP profiles when they are used as a priori. Finally, we discuss the possibility of enhancing sensitivity to the tropospheric ozone column in the combined algorithm using additional wavelengths between 300-310 nm.
